After the Herman Wells statute on the Indiana University campus was vandalized with paint and a Palestinian flag, I sent some people this email:

My house was vandalized in a similar way. I tell the story at https://ericrasmusen.substack.com/p/an-old-mans-stories-midnight-blood .

As I say there, the police came-- both city and campus-- and were very sympathetic, though they never caught anybody. I bought some weaponry as a result-- I won't say exactly what, since I don't want to reveal my defenses to people who might believe violence is justified for people whose opinions they think are bad enough.

I googled a bit, and it isn't clear whether this is a misdemeanor or a felony. It is a felony if IU is "a school". A lot depends on prosecutorial discretion, and if I were prosecutor I would charge it as a misdemeanor even if I could charge it as a felony, and I'd ask for a week in jail, a $1,000 fine (the max), and repayment in full for the clean-up on pain of a six-month sentence if repayment didn't happen.
